Bronchiolitis


Bronchiolitis is an obstructive pulmonary disease of infants and young children, caused most often by infection with Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). The severity of illness caused by RSV ranges from mild upper respiratory tract infection to bronchiolitis or pneumonia. RSV is the primary cause of bronchiolitis. Parainfluenza viruses and adenoviruses are less commonly associated with the disease. Severity of illness decreases as children become older, and infection involves primarily the upper respiratory tract in later life. In the United States, RSV infection occurs during November through April.
