Monitoring children’s development is a critical aspect of pediatric health care supervision. The pediatrician who suspects developmental problems in a child must be prepared to help the family gain access to evaluation services and obtain appropriate intervention. Early intervention has the potential to affect both the child’s developmental outcome and the family’s functioning. It focuses on three developmental disabilities that manifest in infancy/early childhood: intellectual disability (formerly known as mental retardation), cerebral palsy, and autistic spectrum disorders; in addition, it highlights learning disability, which becomes evident during the school-age years.
